Electives: Day 2 complete!

Day 2 of our electives finished up today so check out what's been happening in all of our locations...

IST Blog Post - Fiona Fruitman

Snorkeling in Eilat was an amazing experience. I've heard so many great things about Israel but one thing that's never been mentioned to me is the beautiful coral reefs that are here in Israel. I've been blessed with the opportunity to see many amazing reefs in places like Mexico, Belize, Hawaii, and the reefs in Eilat are definitely up to par. When we first dove in we saw a lot of beautiful sea creatures including rainbow fish, one of my favorite types of fish. It was such a cool experience that I'm so happy that we all had the opportunity to share.

Sea-to-Sea Hike

Sea to Sea is a short trek in Israel, spanning from the Mediterranean Sea to the Sea of Galilee. It's usually a three or four days trip, which suggests a nice experience of the Upper Galilee.  It is tradition to take a small bottle of water from one sea and dump it into the other. Another tradition is to dunk your head, or go swimming, in each sea.

Leket Israel - http://leket.org.il/english/

Founded in 2003, Leket Israel serves as the country's largest food bank and food rescue network actively working to alleviate the problem of nutritional insecurity among Israel's diverse population.
Statistics reveal that a quarter of Israel’s 7.7 million citizens (1.9 million people) are living in poverty; among them are some 850,000 hungry children. Yet, at the same time, literally hundreds of thousands of tons of perfectly good, nutritious food are needlessly destroyed each year.  Furthermore, studies in Israel indicate that nearly a quarter of the country's population suffers from an imbalanced or insufficient diet due to poverty.

Since 1998, Pitchon Lev has been working to fulfill an ideology and vision – that there will be no hungry, poor or needy people in the State of Israel. Pitchon Lev extends a hand, together with devoted supporters and a network of volunteers, to disadvantaged people throughout Israel. Through Pitchon Lev’s Aid Centers food, clothes and shoes are distributed to needy families. Realizing that the future of Israeli society is embedded in today’s youth,  Pitchon Lev established the educational program “Touching the Horizon”, aiming to provide youth with the tools and personal empowerment to break the cycle of poverty
